The Book of the Delmar #4: Breach
Names:

Mako: Mako's real name is Austin. The idea behind the naming of Delmar children is that the person who marries into the Delmar family brings a name from his or her home country. Dylan named their first child after a Delmar ancestor, so this was his time to shine with an American name for their second son. Being a truly proud Texan, he named the boy Austin, after one of the earliest leaders in Texas history, Stephen F. Austin. The nickname "Mako" was given to him when his father realized just how fast the kid could move through the water - like a Mako shark.
Karl: Prince Karl is actually named after my dad who was more thrilled than I've ever seen him to find out that he'd been made royalty. Karl means "man or warrior," but the meaning is insignificant. The character of Karl was intended to be a staunchly loyal friend and family member to Mako, and that is definitely something that can be said of my dad as well. Family always comes first.

Me & My Dad, "Prince" Karl
Alexandrina: Princess Alex got her name after I did some internet research on possible names for the (at that time) awaited British princess. Alexandrina was in a long list of possible family names the Prince and his wife might choose. I chose it because I loved how many nicknames I could get out of it.

Ms. Paulette: The kindly B&B owner got her name from my Aunt Paulette who truly would open her home to anyone. Her daughters who helped run the place during her illness are named for her real life daughters, Karyn and Marilyn.

Captain Bud: Bud is named for my Uncle Bud who would happily spend his days shooting the breeze and flirting with pretty women.

Harlow Karnes: The meaning of Harlow's name is insignificant. I wanted this character to have a name that sounded contemporary upper class. Karnes is the name of a very wealthy historical family near the place I grew up, and I felt like it just rolled well with Harlow.

It's probably becoming pretty obvious that a lot of the names in these books came from my family. Once they heard I'd named this or that after one of them, they all began asking when they'd get included. So I made it my goal to get them all in on this book, and I'm pretty sure I did.

The boats: The Pearly Sue is named after my cousin's wife Kasey whose was dubbed Pearly Sue by my mom for some reason.
The Beckaroo is named for another cousin's wife, Becky. The Midas Touch is actually named after my mom. Her name is Mida. But the Karnes' needed a very lavish name for their yacht, so this seemed to fit perfectly.

The Sharks: The sharks were also all named after family members. The Marshall is actually named after my cousin Marshall. I know that the usual spelling for the usage in Breach is Marshal, but I had to keep to the family thing and name it for him. He thought it was pretty cool. The idea of the Marshall comes from the famed Colossus of Air Jaws.

Jeff & Sue Ann Smith were named for my cousin and her husband, Jeff & Sue Ann Smith.
My cousin Johanna and her husband Henry who had their names combined for Harlow's beloved dog "Sir Henry's Johanna" better known as Jo-Jo Boo.
Jumpin' Jess (and my brother Nate who got a brief mention in book 1)
My uncle Larry who got a boat captain named after him.
The Story of My LIfe by One Direction: Breach is the first book since Legend of Shark Island that I can definitely say had a theme song. Legend had several as you can see on the trivia page for that book, but Breach only had one. I heard "The Story of My Life" by One Direction long before I started writing Breach, but even though the lyrics really don't match the story, the feeling of the song, or at least the feeling it gives me, painted Mako's story into my head. I won't spoil anything here, but I will say that, to me, it just fit.
